As the IEP season begins it can create a lot of stress and anxiety for families. We often hear parents say they didn't get what they need for their child to succeed in school. HLC is here to help.
IEP Meetings: What to Remember
You are a BIG part of the team and decision-making process.
YOU are your child's biggest advocate.
Review all the paperwork sent home from school ahead of time, and ask your child's outpatient therapists for progress reports if appropriate to share with the school team.
After reviewing the paperwork, ASK questions if there are things that you do not understand. Ask the school staff and/or your child's outpatient therapist (many of us were/are also school therapists) if you do have questions or don't understand the paperwork (it's A LOT!).
If you continue to have questions during the meeting, or are not in agreement with a part of the IEP, you can ask to reconvene the meeting at a later date once those questions have been answered.
School teams really are trying to do the best for each child that they provide support to, it's not a you vs. them meeting, it's a collaboration and they welcome your insight and expertise as the child's parent.
